Vaishnava Calendar AS IT IS according to Srila Prabhupāda

JUST LIKE CHRISTMAS DAY THEY HAVE FIXED UP ON THE 25TH DECEMBER, BUT OUR JANMASTAMI TITHI IS NOT FIXED UP LIKE THAT. MY BIRTHDAY IS ON THE 1ST SEPTEMBER, 1896, BUT THIS YEAR THE TITHI OF MY BIRTHDAY WAS FIXED FOR THE 4TH SEPTEMBER. SO IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO CALCULATE, THEREFORE WE HAVE TO TAKE HELP FROM THE INDIAN EXPERT ALMANAC ASTRONOMERS.

69-09-30. Letter: Madhudvisa

Despite the common use of the new invented GBC calendar Srila Prabhupāda always use the Māyāpur Calendar. This calendar is perfectly calculated by Indian almanac astronomers as Prabhupāda states. So we need only one universal calendar for everyone on this earth.

Even the GBC is admitting that:

53. That the GBC accepts the Yoga Pitha Gaudiya Panjika calendar as authoritative for ISKCON on the instructions of Srila Prabhupada. It is also Srila Prabhupada’s instructions that the Panjika be followed in any time zone of the world according to the same Calendar date as observed in Mayapur. Bhakti Caru Swami shall secure and certify an official translation. [Provisional Order]

(GBC Resolutions February 25, 1988)

So it’s important we follow the correct dates otherwise we have to bear the consequences:

“IF ONE PERFORMS THE SRADDHA CEREMONY OF OBLATIONS TO THE FOREFATHERS ON THE EKADASI TITHI, THEN THE PERFORMER, THE FOREFATHERS FOR WHOM THE SRADDHA IS OBSERVED, AND THE PUROHITA, OR THE FAMILY PRIEST WHO ENCOURAGES THE CEREMONY, ALL GO TO HELL.” (SB 7.14.20-23)

“According to Mayapur Panjika* today is Adhivas day of Gour Purnima. Devotees at Vrindaban and Nabadwipa are enjoying the celebration. I am here alone without any devotee companion. But I have come here to serve the Lord and not for personal happiness. I am prepared to live in hell even if I am able to serve the Lord. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu wanted that His mission should be propagated all over the world and that is my objective. I do not mind the inconvenience personally felt.”

>>> Ref. VedaBase => Sunday 6 March 1966

“2. WHEN THERE IS AN IMPORTANT DVADASI, THE EKADASI FASTING IS TRANSFERRED ON THE DVADASI, AND THIS IS CALLED MAHADVADASI. THE 26TH OCTOBER, 1970, IS ACTUALLY DVADASI, SO THE FASTING IS OBSERVED TOGETHER, OR EKADASI FASTING IS DISREGARDED, AND THE DVADASI (MAHADVADASI) FASTING IS TAKEN AS IMPORTANT.

You were give this old Panjika just to consult the names and spelling only. The dates are different, so whatever date I have given, that is correct. WHY YOU ARE SEARCHING BYANJALI DVADASI IN THIS LAST YEAR’S PANJIKA? WHAT I HAVE GIVEN IS FROM THIS YEAR’S PANJIKA, SO EVERYTHING WILL NOT COLLABORATE.
5. 7th February, 1971–Varaha-Dvadasi, I have explained the position in regard to #2.
6. SO FAR DETERMINING EKADASI IT IS COUNTED 11 DAYS AFTER THE FULL MOON AND 11 DAYS AFTER THE NEW MOON, BUT SOMETIMES IT SO HAPPENS AS YOU HAVE NOTED ONE DAY LATER. HOWEVER, WHAT I HAVE GIVEN IS CORRECT.”

70-04-29. Letter: Pradyumna

In the last quote we can clearly see that Ekadasi is oriented on the waning and waxing of the moon. That is the same for everyone.

“YOU SHOULD RECOMMEND THE AVOIDANCE OF MIXED EKADASI AND THE PERFORMANCE OF PURE EKADASI. YOU SHOULD ALSO DESCRIBE THE FAULT IN NOT OBSERVING THIS. One should be very careful as far as these items are concerned. If one is not careful, one will be negligent in executing devotional service.

  1. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda!

Excuse me sir if I may appear impertinent, but I must say something. Nowhere does Prabhupāda directly say “do not use local time to calculate tithi”. He never says “do not calculate astrological events according to the time and place you are”. He only had access to one calendar in those days, the Mayapur calendar that He carried on his travels around the world. So of course there was only one way He could observe any particular Vaishnava event back then.

According to the principles of astrology – whether it be western, eastern, tropical, sidereal, Jyotisha or Surya-Siddhanta – calculations are always made for the LOCAL TIME AND PLACE. Always. Even Full and New Moons can occur on different days on the other side of the world according to Time Zone.

There is no relevance of calculations done in one place to anywhere else – just as His reference to last year’s calendar is only to get the proper names and terms, and was not to be used for any other purpose.

“According to time and place”. Didn’t Prabhupāda always make adjustments for time and place? Had He had access to proper jyotish astrologers who could calculate panchang and panchika calendars for wherever He was in His travels, surely wouldn’t that have been used? If you have the facility to calculate Ekadasi, Full Moon, Appearance Days etc for any given time and place on the planet why on Earth would it NOT be employed?

Prabhupāda was not afraid of technology. He used microphones and tape recorders, typewriters, photography, printing, automobiles, airplanes, whatever was available at the time. Now that we have internet and computers we should employ those. To not do this is a waste of resources. Everyone has access to correct jyotish calculations according to time and place all around the globe nowadays.

I hope this meets you well, prabhu.

  2. Pranams. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

We are simply following the standard that Srila Prabhupada Set for ISKCON. Any own calculations or ideas leads to deviations.

Here Prabhupada says that we need to take help from the INDIAN almanac astronomers (not from westerners!):

Also here Prabhupada clearly gives here the impression that the Mayapur time and place is the way to calculate so there is no other alternative as u need to observation the correct date and time.

What comes from Srila Prabhupada mouth is coming is divine Nectar, what he speaks comes from Krishna!
